Dreams often have a peculiar arrival time. Our job is twofold: we must simply trust that it will arrive and, in the meantime, prepare for our guest.
In the early days of our friendship, my college friend, Aileen, and I quickly bonded over author and comedian, David Sedaris. I vividly remember reading his essay collection, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, on a beach in Croatia back in my teenage years. By the time Aileen and I met, we began to exchange Sedaris’s books (Holidays on Ice) and text each other photos of his newest release in Barnes and Noble (which around that time was Calypso).
On several occasions, Aileen invited me to our local performing arts center to see Sedaris live, but between work and school schedules I never found the chance to make it. One day, she surprised me with his book, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, after attending one of such shows. The gift was a sweet gesture made even sweeter when I turned to the title page and found it humorously signed by the author:
